Matthew 7:6 How To React To Others Mocking Christianity
Mat 7:6 Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls Before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear You in pieces.
It is impossible to live this life without being confronted by situations in which you do not know how to act or react. I am thinking of the times when I found myself in a situation where my Christianity was challenged by people with little to zero spiritual understanding.
I remember listening to my father-in-law make a statement several years back about family values, during a discussion we were having about the problems in America. We were discussing politics. He said that he was planning on voting for Bob Dole for president but he wished the Republicans would give up on their stupid family values theme. He felt that a prospering economy and little to no taxes would take care of all our woes. Basically he felt like many others that life is devoid of spiritual answers. I really wanted to challenge him about this. However, before I opened my mouth, the Holy Spirit reminded me about a passage in 1Corinthians:
1 Cor 2:14 But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
I quickly dropped the subject but felt frustrated about not saying something to him about the spiritual life and the things of God. But I knew he would not even begin to comprehend and perhaps as Jesus said, he would have trampled the truth under his feet.
A very dear friend of mine recently found herself in a situation at work where the LORD Jesus was mocked in a joke. She felt as if she should have said something to defend out LORD. She did nothing and dropped the subject in the same manner I did with my father-in-law. She also felt frustrated being in a circumstance and not being able to do anything. She even felt guilty as if she should have defended Jesus cause. Should she have taken on these spiritually blinded people? If she did what would have happened?
Jesus himself said it best "Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine." When we attempt to defend the cause of Jesus or our Christianity before people in whom the Holy Spirit has little to no place we set ourselves up for trouble. Time and time again we are instructed to not rebuke and let it go.
Prov 9:8 Do not correct a scoffer, lest he hate you; Rebuke a wise man, and he will love you.
Prov 13:1 A wise son heeds his father's instruction, But a scoffer does not listen to rebuke.
Prov 17:10 Rebuke is more effective for a wise man Than a hundred blows on a fool.
Mat 10:14 "And whoever will not receive you nor hear your words, when you depart from that house or city, shake off the dust from your feet.
Mat 10:15 "Assuredly, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city!
If we take on these scoffers we will find ourselves in arguments we do not need to be in. These people are just looking for an excuse to trample our beliefs. They want us to fall into sin by saying things we ought not during the heat of a battle when our thoughts are emotion based. The best thing to do in these situations is to quietly leave. JESUS IS MORE THAN ABLE TO DEFEND HIMSELF! He does not need us to do it. Our job is to spread love to a dead and dying world WHERE people are seeking salvation and where people are open to receive the good news.
Heavenly Father, teach us when to hold on to your truth and when to openly spread it. Let your Word go out without void. Give us spiritual discernment and wisdom to use your truth in a way that will be glorifying to you. Help us oh Lord, to let the words that come from our mouth be uplifting, holy, and profitable. Otherwise, help us to be quiet.
Remember:
Mat 10:22 "And you will be hated by all for My name's sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved.
